|Steve McMahon believes Liverpool have a real chance of bringing the Barclays Premier League trophy back to Merseyside next term.|
| McMahon was an integral part of the last Reds side to win the league in 1990 – and he now sees familiar title-winning qualities in Rafa Benitez’s squad.
“They went out in the last couple of months and played with a lot of confidence,” said McMahon, referring to a run of 10 wins from 11 which took the title race to the penultimate weekend.
“As a result they’ve gone at teams, so it’s a shame they just fell short.
“They won nothing but you can see an improvement and you can see things happening. The fans should be confident for next year – I’m confident.
“If we start next year like we finished this one, we’ve got a real chance of winning the league.”
In an exclusive interview with Liverpoolfc.tv, McMahon also identified an unsung hero in the Anfield dressing room – Pepe Reina.
The 17-times England international puts Reina in a similar class to his former teammate Bruce Grobbelaar.
“Pepe Reina is a fantastic goalkeeper and he’s underrated,” said McMahon.
“He is great. He and Bruce are different characters and different types of goalkeeper, but they’re both great goalkeepers in their own right.”
McMahon is promoting Liverpool’s pre-season tour to South East Asia as group commercial director of the Singapore-based Profitable Group.
